LIVING LABS ARE PREPARING SLOVAKIA FOR THE SMART ERA

We have exciting news! The Smart Transformation and Innovation Consortium Slovakia (STICS) is moving into its next phase.

STICS was created with a clear goal: to connect stakeholders across sectors and build a functional, modern innovation ecosystem for Slovakia. And right from the start, this mission has been successful—24 international partners have already joined the project, jointly shaping Slovakia’s innovative future. The consortium includes universities and research institutions (9), companies (7), nonprofit organizations (3), technology transfer organizations (2), and municipalities (3).

Preparatory Phase Successfully Completed!

STICS launched its preparatory phase in April 2025, and this phase has now been successfully concluded.

On 10 December 2025, representatives of all 24 partners met at the Faculty of Management of Comenius University in Bratislava for the General Assembly to review the achievements of the first phase. The meeting was opened by the Dean, Prof. Peter Štarchoň.

Representatives from academia, municipalities, and the business sector are already celebrating the first early successes. Across six Living Labs, an open collaboration system is being tested step by step, transforming data and ideas into practical solutions for towns and villages.

  • The municipality of Horné Srnie has mapped the energy efficiency of its public buildings, assessed the potential for renewable energy sources, and launched wastewater monitoring.

  • In Kežmarok, a catalogue of analyses and data dashboards is being developed to support better decision-making.

  • The Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region anticipates new tools for data-driven decision-making.

What’s Coming Next?

In the next phase, eight work packages will deliver concrete outputs—first prototypes, models, and tools that will be tested and refined by the partners. We are gearing up for the full launch of six Living Labs covering a wide spectrum of areas, from rural and urban environments to social innovation and data infrastructure.

At the Faculty of Management of Comenius University, the Smart Green Campus is being developed as a testing ground for green and smart solutions directly in an urban environment.

The Territorial Data Center and TP Living Lab aims to create standardized spatial data and applications that will provide municipalities with a more accurate and actionable understanding of their territory.
